Simply Beautiful

Laos

Laos is Southeast Asia's most serene destination, a landlocked country of ancient temples, French colonial heritage and some of the region's most spectacular natural scenery. The UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, with its gilded wats and morning alms-giving ceremonies, represents the spiritual heart of the country, while the capital Vientiane offers a relaxed introduction to Lao culture along the Mekong River.

From the limestone karst landscapes of Vang Vieng to the coffee plantations and waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau near Pakse, Laos rewards slow travel. The new high-speed railway has transformed connectivity between major cities, making it easier than ever to explore this deeply Buddhist nation where time seems to move more gently.

Do I need a visa to visit Laos?

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at international airports and land borders, or apply for an e-Visa in advance. The standard tourist visa costs USD 30-42 depending on nationality and allows a 30-day stay. Citizens of ASEAN countries, Japan, Russia, Switzerland and several others are exempt from visa requirements for short visits.

What currency is used in Laos?

The Lao Kip (LAK) is the official currency, but Thai Baht and US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, hotels and larger restaurants. It is useful to carry small denominations of Kip for markets, tuk-tuks and temple donations. ATMs dispensing Kip are available in major cities.

When is the best time to visit Laos?

The best time to visit Laos is from November to February during the cool dry season, with comfortable temperatures and little rainfall. March and April are hotter before the monsoon arrives. The rainy season from May to October brings heavy showers but also lush green landscapes and fewer tourists.

Is English widely spoken in Laos?

English is spoken in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants and by younger generations, particularly in Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Vang Vieng. Lao is the national language, and in rural areas English proficiency is more limited. Learning a few basic Lao phrases is appreciated by locals.

What is the Laos-China Railway?

The Laos-China Railway opened in December 2021 and connects Vientiane to the Chinese border, with stops at Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. The high-speed trains make travel between major Laotian cities fast and comfortable — Vientiane to Luang Prabang takes about 2 hours, and Vientiane to Vang Vieng takes about 30 minutes.
